In a recent "Asked & Answered" session, Rockstar Games was asked the question everyone has been wanting the answer to: "Why don’t you give us more news on 'Grand Theft Auto V' (GTA V)"?

Their answer? "We are sorry if you find this frustrating, but please understand, we don’t do this because we ‘don’t care about our fans' 'don’t respect our fans’ 'hate GTA fans etc' – precisely the opposite! We do it because we want to make sure we only release 100% correct information, and because we want to keep plenty back for the actual game release so there are still lots of surprises when you play it."

GTAV"GTA V" is the incredibly hyped up game that fans have been waiting for since its official announcement November 3, 2011.

In a "bold new direction in open-world freedom," players will get the chance to make it rich  in the sunny state of California.

But for those of you who can wait no longer, here are two "smuggled" screenshots Rockstar Games teased to fans.

gta v gta iV graphics

Five new trailers for video game "Grand Theft Auto V" are finally here.

It's been five years since the last "GTA" title was released and the visual difference is phenomenal. The graphics still aren't as good as say "Uncharted 3" or "Battlefield 3"; however, they're pretty beautiful for a GTA title.

The trailers are so popular, Joystiq reported there was a 55 minute wait to view them on the Rockstar site.

The latest installment from Rockstar will be released on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 consoles September 17.

Check them out below along with some scenic views from the game.

The first three trailers introduce three characters from the upcoming title: Michael, Franklin, and Trevor.

These next two are full trailers for the entire game.

Here are a few examples of what you can look forward to in the game:

'Grand Theft Auto' Publisher Says People Are Willing To Pay $20 For iPhone Games

grand theft auto V GTA

The case for the iPhone and iPad becoming platforms for premium, or "AAA," games just got a whole lot stronger, says the CEO of Take-Two Interactive.

Pocket Gamer's Mark Brown caught that on Take-Two's recent earnings call, the CEO bragged about the success of the June launch of "XCOM: Enemy Unknown" on iOS, stating "consumers are willing to pay a premium price for a premium entertainment".

"XCOM," which originally came out on the PC and for consoles at $49 and up, costs $19.99 when purchased on Apple's App Store. It joined the top 10 highest grossing apps its first week.

For those used to paying little-to-nothing for games on their phone, that price seems more than a little steep. But for gamers used to buying mobile games for Nintendo and Sony handhelds, buying a top-tier console title for $20 seems like a bargain.

With the success of "XCOM" and older "Grand Theft Auto" titles on iOS and Apple integrating game controller support into the upcoming iOS 7, it seems increasingly likely that game developers will take a serious look at Apple devices when deciding which platforms to launch their titles on.

'Grand Theft Auto V' Cost More To Make Than Nearly Every Hollywood Blockbuster Ever Made

$

gta v

Other than movies, one of this fall's most anticipated releases is the long-awaited next video game in the "Grand Theft Auto" franchise.

GTA V comes to stores September 17, and when it does it won't only be one of the most expensive games ever made, but also one of the costliest pieces of entertainment to have hit shelves.

At $266 million, the fifth installment of the Rockstar game will have surpassed the estimated production budget (without marketing) for every Hollywood blockbuster adjusted for inflation except "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End"which cost an estimated $300 million.

According to a report in Scotland-based paper The Scotsman, the game's development and marketing budget cost £170 million (equivalent to $266 million).

How does this compare to the cost to make other video games?

Here are three of the priciest games to date:

Red Dead Redemption (also a Rockstar game): $80-$100 million

Disney Infinity: $100 million+

"Grand Theft Auto IV": $100 million

The only game who that would come close to matching the price of GTA V would be "Star Wars: The Old Republic" which was rumored to cost $200 million after the game was in production for six years. Cinemablend believes the price was slightly lower due to LucasArts licensing fees

It should come as no surprise GTA V comes at a high cost. Last year, the video game industry was worth an estimated $67 billion, according to Forbes. (Note this figure includes not only console and PC games but also games for mobile devices.)

In four more years, the industry should be valued at $82 billion, according to a report from the Worldwide Market Forecasts for the Video Game and Interactive Entertainment Industry.

Last year, the box office took in $10.8 billion in ticket sales.

Rockstar estimates the game will make $1 billion before the year's end.

It wouldn't be an absurd figure for the game to earn. Not only is the "Grand Theft Auto" franchise well recognized, but other titles have made that kind of cash.

The previous two "Call of Duty" (CoD) releases both earned more than $1 billion — and fast.

Last year, "Call of Duty: Black Ops II"grossed $1 billion after just 15 days in release.

Prior to that, Activision's previous release, "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare" crossed the $1 billion mark in 16 days.

To compare that to the film industry, it took "Avatar"17 days to earn $1 billion worldwide.

'Grand Theft Auto V' Has Its Own Amazing Facebook And Twitter Parodies

"Grand Theft Auto V" came out yesterday, and while storyline mode is great, we're busy finding a bunch of the cool Easter Eggs in the game.

Rockstar, who developed the game, loves throwing in a bunch of company and product parodies (iFruit stands in for Apple products).

Among them is GTA's own version of Facebook and Twitter on the game's fake Internet service.

Both are extremely thorough and detailed parodies.

Life Invader fills in for Facebook.

The description for the site is: "The reason the world never gets anything done any more."

And head to their pages, too.

Rockstar Games went as far as creating a real companion site for Life Invader.

Bleeter is GTA's version of Twitter which uses sheep in place of birds.

"Information isn't about imparting knowledge anymore. The Internet changed all that.

Welcome to world of self aggrandizing shorthand. Keep strangers and people you hated in high school up to speed with every mundane detail of your life 24/7. Welcome the the delusion of having an interesting life and friends.

Rival Game Hijacks 'GTA V' Release With 'GAT V'

gat v saints row

People excited for the big release of "Grand Theft Auto V" may have been a little confused if they saw news for similarly titled GAT V yesterday.

Popular video game "Saints Row IV"  — a game known as a "GTA" clone for its striking similarities — released downloadable content (DLC) yesterday for PC gamers called "GAT V."

Developer Volition made the DLC free on Steam yesterday. (Today, it's $2.99.)

It was a humorous prank for the company to pull on the day that the most anticipated game of the fall was being launched.

What's the deal?

While "Grand Theft Auto V" came out for Xbox 360 and PS3 September 17, PC gamers were left in the dark.

Unlike previous installments, no date was given for a PC release.

Though Rockstar Games cofounder Dan Houser has said a PC version of the game is "up for consideration," a Change.org petition was started demanding its release on the platform.

The petition has drawn with more than 430,000 signatures.

Volition simply took advantage of  the lack of GTA V on PC, by releasing its DLC on the same release date.

"Saints Row" publisher Deep Silver even paid to promote #GATV on Twitter leading to a lot of confusion since #GTAV was also trending.

Others applauded it.

'Grand Theft Auto V' Reviews: It's The Epic Game We've Waited Five Years For

$

grand theft auto v

The latest game in Rockstar Games' "Grand Theft Auto" series was released Tuesday.

It's been more than five years since the last game, "Grand Theft Auto IV," came out in April 2008 to critical acclaim.

Expectations have been incredibly high for "GTA V."

Besides Rockstar's reputation, the game also had significant investment behind it: a recent report noted that the game cost $266 million to make, an amount larger than the budgets of most big-budget films.

Critics have been universally positive about the game with the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game receiving a 97 and 98 out of 100 rating on review aggregation site Metacritic respectively.

We received a review copy of the game Monday. After two days of playtime, and there are eight big takeaways from early reviews of the game that ring true:

1. The story starts out strong but breaks down near the end due to a lack of character development for two of the three protagonists.
Xav de Matos for Joystiq:

As the three characters grow closer, the narrative goes from an interesting story of past mistakes, redemption and revenge to the story of three men screaming at each other in a seemingly endless cycle. This centers mostly on Michael and Trevor's shared history. After a lengthy time apart, emotions between the former colleagues come to a head, and GTA5 pounds at this conflict for far too long. At every turn, the pair are at each other's throats. Character development is difficult to parse as each refuses to move on from the past, reluctant to show any significant growth, and it became less and less entertaining to watch them interact with one another.

2. The ability to switch between protagonists has made the game far more immersive. As Edge's review of the game puts it:

Rockstar uses it to gracefully nudge you towards this vast world’s many activities, too – Michael, for instance, might be parked up outside a tennis court, or stuck in traffic near his shrink’s office. You’ll find yourself naturally switching every few missions, and playing the game in character, choosing vehicles, activities and radio stations based on who’s under your control. You soon realise that, rather than the gangster flicks of GTAs past, you’re now playing an episodic TV show.

3. The new heist-style missions are fantastic. Polygon's Chris Plante likes the way they tie in the game's character-switching mechanic, which lets players switch between the three main characters at almost any time:

In one minute of a heist, I swapped between Franklin commandeering a tractor, Michael dispatching snipers and Trevor unloading a rocket launcher into a pickup truck. Swapping so drastically improves the pace of Grand Theft Auto 5 that I can't imagine the series moving forward without it.

Swapping even aids in basic character development, always plopping you into some mundane but suggestive moment in the leads' day-to-day lives. When I plopped into Michael's world to find him sipping on whiskey and watching a classic movie, I felt like this person existed even when I wasn't playing as him.

grand theft auto v heist

4. Half of the fun is ignoring the story and exploring the city of Los Santos, an alternate-reality take on Los Angeles.

I live with a number of people from the Los Angeles area who couldn't get over how much the game gets right in its representation of the different areas in the cities and the transitions between them. Most said it was "surreal." The mini-games and activities available throughout the game world are not only fun, they reinforce the feeling that you're in a real city - whether you're going for a bike ride along the game's equivalent of Venice Beach or doing yoga with the wealthy residents of 'Vinewood.'

5. While the "Grand Theft Auto" games are known for their occasional bugs and graphical issues, "GTA V" performs admirably on the older hardware in the Xbox 360 and PS3
IGN's Keza MacDonald:

It pushes the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 further than it has any right to, and it looks incredible. The biggest jump in quality since Grand Theft Auto IV is the character animation, but the world is also much more expansive, detailed, and populous. The price we pay for that is occasional framerate dips and texture pop-in, which I found became more prominent the longer I played, but never significantly detracted from my experience. For such a gigantic and flexible world it’s also remarkably bug-free – I encountered just three minor issues in the 35 hours I spent on my first playthrough, none of which caused me to fail a mission.

6. If you have the option, get the PS3 version of the game.
As Kotaku's Kirk Hamilton reports, Xbox 360 users who have installed the game improperly have had performance issues.

7. Bottom line: If you're a fan of of the series or the action genre in general, you should buy "GTA V." The game's simplified checkpoint system makes it far more accessible for casual players while the improvements to driving and combat will satisfy hardcore action gamers.

8. Parents: There is graphic violence and sex in "Grand Theft Auto V." If you wouldn't want your child to watch a show like "Game of Thrones," you wouldn't want your child to play "GTA V."

Here's a trailer that shows off many aspects of the game without spoiling the story:

"Grand Theft Auto V" has officially passed $1 billion in sales.

After making a record-breaking $800 million in one day, owner Take-Two Interactive announces the Rockstar Game surpassed the milestone after being out for less than three days.

Grand Theft Auto is a cultural phenomenon and Rockstar Games continues to redefine what can be achieved in interactive entertainment," said Strauss Zelnick, Chairman and CEO of Take-Two, in the press release. “We are incredibly proud of the extraordinary critical and commercial response to Grand Theft Auto V.”

In 2012, it took "Call of Duty: Black Ops II" 15 days to reach $1 billion in sales.

James Cameron's "Avatar" (2009) was the fastest a movie to make that amount in 17 days, according to Deadline. It took "The Avengers"19 days to hit that mark last year.

Grand Theft Auto Gets The Google Glass Treatment

"Okay, Glass. Let's play."

A technologist at digital agency Roundarch Isobar, Mike DiGiovanni, has devised a way to bring the desktop version of Grand Theft Auto III to Google Glass, AdAge reports.

Google Glass projects GTA3's GPS system onto Glass's screen, which is placed in front of the user's right eye. This allows players to better navigate Liberty City, GTA3's fictionalized version of New York City.

The app idea is DiGiovanni's fourth piece of Glassware. The others include fun Glass-centric apps like Winky, which allows users to take a photo just by batting their eyes.

Originally, DiGiovanni wanted to call the app "Glass Theft Auto", but thought people would wrongly assume it would be an app to help them steal cars in real life. He's instead opted for GTA Navigation for Glass.

DiGiovanni believes that Glass could be particularly transformational for gaming, AdAge says.

The Boy Who Snuck Onto A Flight To Las Vegas Has Previously Stolen A Car

MINNEAPOLIS (Reuters) - A 9-year-old boy who passed through security at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and caught a flight to Las Vegas without a ticket had previously gained entry to a water park without a ticket and stolen a car, a local newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The apparent ease with which the boy, who is from Minneapolis, was able to get through security and onto a flight on Thursday raised questions about airport and airline security.

The boy is the son of a woman who works at the airport and county child-protection staff have reviewed his family situation four times since December, according to an email from Janine Moore, area director of Hennepin County's Human Services and Public Health Department, which was obtained by the Minneapolis Star-Tribune newspaper.

Moore could not immediately be reached by Reuters on Tuesday for comment on the email, which the newspaper said was written on Monday and sent marked as private to county administrators and board members. Moore's email did not identify the boy.

The boy was able to get through security at the airport on Thursday morning without a boarding pass and get on a Delta Air Lines flight to Las Vegas. His status was not discovered by flight crew until the airplane was in flight, authorities say.

Las Vegas police took the boy into custody when the airplane landed and the incident is under review by the Transportation Security Administration and Delta.

The boy rode to the airport Wednesday on the light rail system that runs from downtown, took a bag from a luggage carousel and went to an airport restaurant where he ate and then left the bag and an unpaid check, said Patrick Hogan, a spokesman from the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport.

Hogan said the boy would not face charges on the incidents because of his age.

According to Moore's email, the boy had a history of taking the light rail without his parents to a suburb near the airport, where he would blend in with a large family to get into a water park.

Moore wrote in the email that the boy stole a car two weeks ago and was arrested on a highway, the newspaper said. The newspaper says her email does not mention where he was arrested or whether he was driving at the time.

"Grand Theft Auto V" has landed itself in the Guinness World Records seven times so far.

That's not surprising considering the game reached $1 billion dollar in sales in an insane amount of time — three days.

Naturally, most of the records have to do with the game's sales mark. Keep in mind, in its first 24 hours, the game sold 11.2 million copies

Here's the full list of records it has broken:

1.    Best-selling action-adventure videogame in 24 hours
2.    Best-selling videogame in 24 hours
3.    Fastest entertainment property to gross $1 billion
4.    Fastest videogame to gross $1 billion
5.    Highest grossing videogame in 24 hours
6.    Highest revenue generated by an entertainment product in 24 hours
7.    Most viewed trailer for an action-adventure videogame

The first trailer released for the game by Rockstar has been viewed more than 37 million times on YouTube.

Previously, the fastest game to reach $1 billion in sales was "Call of Duty: Black Ops II" in 15 days.

life invader signsHere at Business Insider, we like to take office tours.

This time, we tour the "Grand Theft Auto V" virtual world parody version of Facebook called Life Invader.

There's even a real-world Life Invader mock website.

"GTA V" citizens who sign up for a profile on Life Invader can "stalk" people if they so choose, and since privacy is not a major concern of Life Invader founder Jay Norris, one can expect the NSA to be keeping close tabs.

The average age of an employee at Life Invader is 14.5 years old according to Norris, and the company is constantly striving to bring the "work hard, play harder" mantra to reality.

Unfortunately, due to the untimely assassination of Life Invader founder Norris on live TV, as of this publishing the Life Invader office is a much more somber place.

Welcome to Life Invader.

Some have accused Life Invader of mimicking Facebook, like with their logo. Security is pretty lax, you just have to look the part.

Walking through the main entrance, the first thing we see is another huge Life Invader sign.

Recent Mexican Truck Thieves May End Up Getting Cancer

radioactive truck

Mexican authorities said a truck carrying the radioactive isotope cobalt-60  was stolen Wednesday from a hospital in Mexico, NBC news reports.

The thieves probably weren't going after the contents though.

“It could be,” one federal official told NBC“that whoever stole the truck had no idea what was inside and was more interesting [sic] in getting a truck.”

IAEA spokeswoman Gill Tudor told NBC News that medical ramifications from these heists have occurred in the past:

"Such thefts are not uncommon, and the thieves do not necessarily know what they have in their possession in addition to the vehicle that may have been the original target. In some cases, for example, radioactive sources have ended up being sold as scrap, causing serious health consequences for people who unknowingly come into contact with it."

The isotope is used for killing certain kinds of pathogens and for industrial imaging (essentially, x-raying buildings), so it's effect on the human body is incredibly deleterious and can cause cancer.

Florida Man Allegedly Stole An Army Humvee Because He Was Bored And High

Humvee In Water

A 19-year-old Florida man was allegedly bored and high Wednesday night and broke into an Army Reserve Training Center, the Orlando Sentinel reports.

Jose Quinones allegedly found the ultimate cure for his boredom in the Sanford, Fla. training center — a five-ton Humvee.

Citing a police report, Tiffany Walden, of the Orlando Sentinel, writes that after searching through a few vehicles:

...  He found one with an anti-theft device on the steering wheel that was loose enough for him to turn the wheel a bit.

Soon, he was charging the tan military vehicle through the barbed-wire fence, driving past an unmanned security gate and motoring across Central Florida.

Humvees are no joke. A mainstay in the U.S. Army since 1985, hummers began to be lovingly referred to as a "Jeep on steroids" by U.S. soldiers. These weighty vehicles are purposefully designed for responding to war and natural disasters.

So, Quinones' allegedly erratic driving of a humvee through residential suburbs was certainly out of place. Residents quickly began calling 911 after seeing the vehicle driving through the streets at night with no lights on, dragging a construction barrel behind it.

Quinones is currently being charged with grand theft, driving under the influence, driving an unregistered vehicle, and marijuana possession.

Only 44% Of Parents Think Video Games Are Bad For Their Kids

$

grand theft auto v

The Electronic Software Association released some new stats about the gaming industry. Some very interesting stats, to say the least. Just about every gamer out there will likely find something interesting in it.

Expansive DLC caught wind of the PDF from the ESA, which rolls out some very interesting facts, such as 44% of parents think that video games are bad for their kids, where-as 56% of parents think that video games are a positive thing in their child's life.

The data also showcases that 87% of parents who buy games for their kids, actually feel that parental controls are useful.

Another interesting tidbit is that despite the complaints about overly violent video games, majority of titles released in mainstream retail space are actually rated for everyone. In fact, 46% of all games released in 2013 were rated 'E' for Everyone, while 23% were rated 'T' for Teen, and only 12% were rated 'M' for Mature.

Quite naturally, the top five selling console games of 2013 were mostly rated 'M' for Mature, with four out of the top five games being M-rated. So despite there being more family-friendly titles on the market, console gamers prefer their adult-oriented content.

It makes sense given that the average age of gamers in the U.S., happens to be 31-years old, with the average age of those who buy games happens to be 35-years old.

The stats also show that game purchasers are split evenly between males and females, and the stats show that 48% of gamers in America are female.

Also, despite hearing tons of whiny little kids on Call of Duty, action and sports games aren't the most played online games in the country... casual and social games are.

Core games made up for 24% of the pie-chart, with MMOs taking up 11% (obviously not as popular in the U.S., as they are in China), card games and trivia titles making up 28% of the score and casual/social games taking 30% of the pie. In the mobile sector, casual /social games make up for 46% of the market, where-as puzzle and trivia games account for 31%. Sadly, hardcore action and sports titles on mobile devices account for only 11% of the market share.

The stats make perfect sense considering that many core gamers don't like dedicating a lot of their time to social/mobile/casual games. While over in Japan the mobile games sector is booming, over here in America it's mostly only used to pass the time while waiting to partake in other activities, such as work or school.

Additionally, Arkadium's research data showed that majority of female gamers spend more money on social and casual games than their male counterparts, and aren't quite as keen on getting into the whole blood and guts stuff.

Overall, total sales in the U.S. – counting digital, retail, software and hardware – came up to $21.53 billion in 2013.

2010 was still the biggest peak in the games marketas far as software sales go, but at that time there was also a ton of Wii shovelware flooding the market and moving units.

You can check out the total stats over on the ESA's PDF. It's well worth checking out.

Lindsay Lohan Is Suing 'GTA V' Makers Claiming The Game Stole Her Likeness — See For Yourself

Lindsay Lohan has filed a lawsuit against the makers of the "Grand Theft Auto V" video game.

In the suit, Lohan claims that character Lacey Jonas is an “unequivocal” reference to the actress, depicting her image, voice, and styles from her clothing line. The game even shows the character avoiding paparazzi outside of the Chateau Marmont Hotel, where Lohan once lived.

When Lohan initially started to craft the lawsuit in December...Lindsay LohanMany assumed she was going to sue over this bikini model character who kind of resembles the actress.grand theft auto v lindsay lohan likenessWhile she may flash the peace sign like Lohan, model Shelby Welinder has confirmed (by posting her GTA V contract to Twitter) that the bikini image is based off of her.Lindsay Lohan peace signOther GTA V art work contains characters wearing Lohan-like accessories...grand theft auto v characterLike these aviator sunglasses.Lindsay Lohan Instagram selfieAnd a hat. But the part Lohan has a real problem with is during a gameplay moment when the Lacey Jonas character hides from paparazzi and gets frustrated when someone doesn't recognize her to help her.

The character exclaims, "I'm really famous! I didn't do anything — this is my average commute ... I am so fat, oh my God, they cannot get a shot of me! How’s my hair? Do I look cute?"

Lohan's suit claims that Rockstar Games used her image for the in-game character of Lacey, "an anorexic actress constantly on the run from voracious celebrity photographers and fans," according to International Business Times.

Below is the specific character Lohan is suing over:lacey jonas grand theft auto 5 gta vlacey jonas gta v grand theft auto 5

Watch the gameplay moment in question below:

Take-Two Interactive Software and Rockstar Games have declined comment on the lawsuit, but Forbes "doubts the case has legs," considering "the character in question was not specifically Lohan, and engages in entirely fictional activities that are designed to parody a certain type of celebrity."

Forbes then cited the Digital Media Law Project to back up their stance:

“As a general matter, you will not be held liable for using someone’s name or likeness in a creative, entertaining, or artistic work that is transformative, meaning that you add some substantial creative element over and above the mere depiction of the person. In other words, the First Amendment ordinarily protects you if you use someone’s name or likeness to create something new that is recognizably your own, rather than something that just evokes and exploits the person’s identity.”

But this isn't the first time an actress has called out a video game for allegedly using her likeness. Last year, Ellen Page accused the makers of "The Last of Us" of using her likeness for a character named "Ellie."

Page later said on Reddit: "I guess I should be flattered that they ripped off my likeness, but I am actually acting in a video game called "Beyond Two Souls," so it was not appreciated."

Video games are getting to be as expensive to produce as Hollywood films.

In fact, some video games have ended up costing way more than even the most expensive feature films.

Unlike with movies, though, the amount of money it costs to make video games is a closely guarded secret. Most of the costs we see floating around are purely based on analyst estimates.

And when specific numbers are released, they take into account not just production, but things like marketing and packaging as well.

"Tomb Raider" - $100 million

"Tomb Raider" came out in 2013 to much hype — and much acclaim. It sold around 1 million copies within 48 hours of its release, and around 6.5 million as of last month.

Game industry analyst Billy Pidgeon estimated that the game cost $100 million to produce.

"Red Dead Redemption" ~ $100 million

Set in the Old West, "Red Dead Redemption" was Rockstar Games' way to prove that it was more than just the company that made "Grand Theft Auto."

The game took more than six years to develop and was delayed several times. According to the New York Times, it cost between $80 million and $100 million to produce.

(Adjusted for inflation: $109 million)

"Grand Theft Auto IV" - $100 million

Speaking of Rockstar Games and "Grand Theft Auto," at the time it came out in 2008, "Grand Theft Auto IV" was the most expensive game ever produced. Its producer, Leslie Benzies, estimated it cost Rockstar around $100 million. Of course, he later said that was just a guess, so take it with a grain of salt.

Within 24 hours, "Grand Theft Auto IV" sold 3.6 million copies, shattering sales records.

(Adjusted for inflation: $110 million)
